Residents threaten to boycott elections

Those who want to exercise their rights, must not be shaken, they must do so because even at voting stations, they will be safe since security will be up to standard."

BARBERTON – Some community members are threatening to boycott the upcoming local government elections that will be held on August ,3,2016.

Mpumalanga News learnt that they decided not to partake in the elections because they don’t want Umjindi Local Municipality to be under Mbombela Local Municipality.

One of the residents, who is not happy about the amalgamation and requested not to reveal his identity said “As community members, we were not happy from the start when they proposed this matter.

But because they think that we are stupid, they go ahead, come voting day bazowuzwa umoya, they will curse the day they took that final decision,”

Meanwhile, the provincial chairperson of EFF, Mr Collen Sedibe said the residents must not boycott the elections, instead they must vote because their voice will be heard.

“It’s their right to vote so that their voice must be heard. They must vote out the ANC because they are the ones who took the decision on their behalf and our party is against this amalgamation because Umjindi is doing well on its own and Mbombela municipality is corrupt,”

The media liaison officer of the ANC at Umjindi, Mr Bhekizwe Nkambule said “We are not aware of this threat and people must not be scared of those people who are planning the boycott, it’s their right to vote because it’s not all of them that want to boycott.

Those who want to exercise their rights, must not be shaken, they must do so because even at voting stations, they will be safe since security will be up to standard.”
