Pupils shine in youth water competition

Three female pupils from Sitintile Secondary School received bursaries for winning the provincial public-speaking competition and representing the province in the national competition.

MBOMBELA – Truly one’s background has nothing to do with one’s success.
Recently three pupils from the deep rurals of Londhindha Primary School in the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality took the first prize in the Baswa le Meetse (Youth in Water) national competition.
During the competition, held in the Eastern Cape on June 28, they won their school a media centre worth R 6 000 by excelling in the poetry category.

They also received a coveted trophy and certificate for their efforts.
The school’s coach, Ms Irene Chiloane also expressed her excitement about the win.

“Our learners were able to express our well-researched theory in a practical way, hence we became the winners,” she said.
Londhindha represented the province well and competed against other schools from the eight provinces.”We are very proud of them,” she said.
Mr Themba Khoza, spokesperson for the Department of Water and Sanitation in the province, added that Refitlhile Primary School from Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality represented the province in the drama category, while Mvuyazi Primary from the Bushbuckridge municipality obtained the third position in the poster category and won themselves R4 000.
Somcuba Primary School from Pienaar in the Mbombela Local Municipality represented the province in both the traditional music and praise poetry categories.
“Baswa le Meetse is a project under the 2020 Vision for Water Education programme targeting grade six learners. The learners participate in art forms as a way of educating one another about water-use efficiency, taking care and protecting water resources and hygiene practices.

The art forms in which the learners compete include drama, music, poetry, praise singing and posters,” explained Khoza.
Baswa le Meetse and other competitions under the 2020 vision play a major role in raising awareness of the importance of water and sanitation among the youth of the country.
The programme also helps to get water ambassadors to ensure the little available water in our country is used in an efficient and conservative way.
