MEC applauds police for busting drug suspects in Kanyamazane

They appeared in court on Monday and also on Tuesday where the suspects were each released with a bail of R3000.

MBOMBELA – Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Mr Vusi Shongwe, has applauded the police in Kanyamazane and the Hawks for arresting two suspects who were in possession of cocaine to the street value of R300 000,00.

The suspects, Zwelakhe Mgomezulu (27) and Sunday Shabangu (23), were arrested in Kanyamazane on Monday. They appeared in court on Monday and also on Tuesday where the suspects were each released with a bail of R3000. The case has been remanded to August 30, to enable the police to further investigate.

The incident occurred after police were tipped off that two suspects were in possession of drugs in a taxi from Mbombela to Kanyamazane. Police stopped and searched the two suspects after they got off the taxi in Kanyamazane.

It is believed that a police informant called police informing them that two men were transporting drugs from Mbombela to Kanyamazane. The MEC says the police did outstanding work by arresting the suspects and it came at an appropriate time before they could even distribute them where ever he was travelling to.

“Drugs destroy communities; many families have been torn apart due to selfish drug dealers who are mainly concerned about making money at the expense of the wellbeing of people. Police should work even harder to also arrest kingpins behind the drug syndicates,” says the MEC.

MEC Shongwe also commended members of the public for working together with police, stating that tipping off police will help in the fight against crime, fraud and corruption. Shongwe says criminals have no place in our communities.

He further added that drug dealers must be rooted out because they destroy the dreams of our future leaders. Shongwe says by speedily prosecuting these suspects, communities will continue to have faith in criminal justice system.
