Unclaimed body of a pensioner laid to rest

At this stage, it is not clear how the pensioner managed to get to the river and there were no body parts that were found missing.

GEDLEMBANE – Finally an unclaimed body of a pensioner who was kept in the state mortuary since last November was buried by government last week.

This comes after police struggled for almost eight months to find relatives of the deceased who was identified as Mr Elphus Mabuza after police had conducted a test. Mabuza ’s body was found in the Mgwenya River and was discovered by people passing by to Kaapmuiden who alerted the police.

Speaking to Mpumalanga News, spokesperson for the Pienaar Police Station, Lt Jabu Ndubane confirmed that Mabuza had been laid to rest.

“As I have mentioned before, that time was not on our side since we did not get any positive response in terms of finding relatives of the deceased. The government conducted a pauper’s funeral for Mabuza because his body was kept in the government mortuary for a very long time,” alluded Ndubane.

Meanwhile, this newspaper also noted that such cases were on the increase. Not so long ago, police at KaNyamazane spend almost three months with an unclaimed body.

The investigation revealed that the unknown pensioner was in the country illegal as it was also discovered that he was originally from Mozambique.

After some few weeks this publication published that the office of the High Commissioner for Refugees in Mozambique based in Pretoria, approached the police and offered to take full responsibility to bury the deceased.
