Get buzzing with the Mzansi Spelling Bee

Children needs to be groomed young as they are, to spell correctly and write proper English regardless of their background.

MBOMBELA- Schools and parents are invited to take part in the Mzansi Spelling Bee aimed at helping grades four to 11 pupils with English.

“Our aim is to get children to spell and write properly. We need to groom our kids, young as they are, to spell correctly and write proper English regardless of their background,” says Tumi Moripe, Mpumalanga’s provincial recruiter.

The programme is run by a non-profit organisation, Miyela, which was formed by a group of young South Africans who aim to contribute towards improving literacy standards in the country.

“The love of words and education is the one gift our country can offer its children in this fast-changing world. Through words we can raise confident kids with the power to break boundaries, dream, create and explore,” explains Lucy Mofokeng, founder of Miyela.

According to Mofokeng, Mzansi Spelling Bee contestants demonstrate that one’s history and background do not have to define one’s ability.

Mzansi Spelling Bee 2015 national finalist, Zameer Dada, and Lesedi Chabedi will be part of Team South Africa this June in preparation for the first annual Pan-African Spelling Bee competition at a date yet to be mentioned. The event will be held in Johannesburg with participants from 54 countries.

Interested schools and parents are invited to apply for the 2016 Mzansi Spelling Bee in all nine provinces. The application fee is R200 per child.

“The amount cares for the kid’s T-shirts, a wordbook, App and we send coaches to monitor them,” adds Moripe.

Application forms are available at

Closing date is on June 30.
