Traffic officers released on R5000 bail

Their bail conditions states that they should hand their passport to the investigating officer and must not leave the country and even Mpumalanga province without informing the investigating officer.

MBOMBELA- The twelve traffic officers arrested over the weekend by members of the Serious Crime Investigation Unit and Hawks had been granted R5 000 bail each by the Nelspruit Magistrate Court on Tuesday.

They were charged with corruption and defeating the ends of justice. Their bail conditions states that they should hand their passports to the investigating officer and must not leave the country and even Mpumalanga province without informing the investigating officer.

Eight were arrested on Saturday and four were arrested on Sunday from various areas in the province. According to provincial Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Dineo Sekgotodi, Hawks members were acting on information that there were traffic officers who were involved in corrupt activities.

“An operation was subsequently launched. Some of the officers were arrested at their homes, while others were brought in by their lawyers,”she said. “Our investigations still continue,” she said.
The officers are aged between 29 and 51 years.
