Nkomazi is winning the fight against hijackers – Shongwe

"We cannot allow ourselves to be bullied by criminals. We are working together with the communities to stop this problem."

NKOMAZI – The police in the province are up in arms trying to curb the latest pandemic to hit the area. Mbuzini has become the new route for criminals to port hijacked cars out of the province.

According to the police, the perpetrators seem to be targeting bigger cars and they waste no time in taking the stolen cars out of the country. Just last week, the community marched to one of the police stations in Schoemansdaal to voice out their concerns on the matter.

The march was also graced by Nkomazi Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr. Thulisile Khoza, who feels they are closer to winning the fight against the criminals.

“I have written letters to different stake holders, the MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Vusi Shongwe, the State Security Minister, Mr David Mahlobo, and the Provincial and acting national police commissioner, requesting their intervention.

“I am encouraged by their swift response to our outcry. They have since sent different teams to come and assess the situation to see how they can intervene,” said Khoza.

Among all the security measures to be put into place, the municipality has confirmed that there are talks of erecting an electric fence at the border, and add the number of soldiers on sight.

“Now that we know the exact ports used to transport the cars to the other countries, we are going to make sure we do something about it. Together we will overcome, and our victory has started,” she added.

The MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Vusi Shongwe has echoed on the Mayor’s words, saying they have security measures in place to curb the situation.

“We are aware of the matter going on in Nkomazi, and we now have control over it, security measures are in place to ensure that the situation gets back to normal.

“We cannot allow ourselves to be bullied by criminals. We are working together with the communities to stop this problem, I cannot divulge all the measures in place, but the criminals should be very scared,” said Shongwe.
