MEC Shongwe welcomes Zuma’s appointment

Shongwe said his Department will give the Commissioner the same support that was given to the two former Provincial Commissioners respectively.

MBOMBELA – Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has congratulated and welcomed the new SAPS Provincial Commissioner General Mondli Zuma at a meeting held in Nelspruit yesterday.

Speaking at an introductory meeting, the MEC said his Department will give the Commissioner the same support that was given to the two former Provincial Commissioners respectively.

“It is important that the Commissioner hit the ground running as the country is on the verge of holding Local Government Elections this year. Mpumalanga has done exceptionally in holding successful major events. We trust that the Commissioner will also work hard to keep up the tradition.

“We will also support him in ensuring that the police in the province remain professional, effective and responsive to the needs of our people,” said Shongwe.

He further told General Zuma that the province has been consistently reducing crime in many categories over the last few years. Shongwe went on to say that the Commissioner should continue with the trend or even improve it so that the people of Mpumalanga are and feel safer.

He has added that his office will urgently facilitate the Justice Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster meeting so that the Commissioner Zuma is introduced to all members of the cluster.

According to Shongwe, this will enable the Commissioner to familiarise himself with security matters in the province.

On the contrary, the EFF has strongly rejected the appointment of the new commissioner, labelling him as a criminal.
