Car hijacking is a cause of concern in the Lowveld

It’s alleged that the criminals are targeting motorists when they are approaching stop signs or speed humps.

MBOMBELA – Motorists are warned not to drive very late at night as car hijacking is rife in some parts of the Lowveld region.

Such incidents escalated last month in Barberton, Pienaar and Nkanini where criminals are using the same strategy to attack drivers.

It’s alleged that the criminals are targeting motorists when they are approaching stop signs or speed humps. Recently a truck driver and his colleagues from the Barberton Abattoir survived by God’s grace at the intersection of the R40 (Nelspruit) and R38 (Badplaas turn-off ) road.

They noticed four man in front of standing in the bakkie (Grey double cab) colt as they jumped off two of them had firearms they pointed and start shooting but they did not managed to take the truck driver drove straight to one of them who was on his site but he miss him.

Spokesperson of the police Const Tutu Nkosi said “After shooting when the truck was approaching Khiyeni primary school the driver noticed that the thugs are following him and he drove straight to the police station and report the matter and we managed to arrest three suspect.”

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of Pienaar SAPS Lt Jabu Ndubane said that sometimes the criminals park their car in the middle of the road and when you get off and approach them to give you a way they take the car.

”Recently we have discovered that thugs using new tricks to disturb driver at Nkanini two cars and a truck has been carjacked.

“According to the information that we have, the thugs sometimes approach drivers on stop signs and speed humps ,sometimes the park their cars in the middle of the road when you approach them, the others take your car.

“In this incident, the Flying Squad found the truck at Kaapmuiden,” she related.

Ndubane added that sometimes they discover stolen cars at Lebombo border post and it is not clear where the thugs were heading to. Recently at Tekwane South it’s alleged that the thugs change the tune as they are using livestock to distract drivers when they want to hijack a car.

Reliable sources said that in the middle of no where you can see a goat or a head of cattle crossing the road while you slow down and they attack you and take the vehicle.

“We heard that they are using livestock to disturb motorists. We are appealing to farmers or community members to take care of their livestock as now they are used for criminal activities,” she ended.
