KABOKWENI – Police have launched an investigation into drug dealing at schools.Drug pushers are allegedly selling narcotics to learners.

The alleged dealers are also accused by police of carrying dangerous weapons. According to local police spokesperson, Capt Shelly Ngomane, provincial community safety and liaison MEC, Mr Vusi Shongwe has intensified the school-safety campaign in a bid to apprehend the perpetrators.

Ngomane said an assortment of drugs, including nyaope, are sold to learners at local schools.
A parent claims there is a Nigerian that seen each morning, coming to supply his “agents” at a certain high school. The concerned parent, who didn’t want to reveal his identity for safety reasons, claimed to have witnessed these activities.

“The problem started last year. Every morning when I accompanied my daughter to catch a taxi, I would see a black Audi A5 with an MP registration, waiting near the school. After a few seconds, I saw three girls talking to the guy and when they left, a group of boys also went to the car.

I noticed that he gave them small boxes and then left,” alleged the parent.
“When I approached about one of the girls about their activities and her relationship with the Audi man, she just said it was her friend and told me to mind my own business,” he said.
The school, according to Ngomane, was one of the schools where dagga had been discovered during a police raid last year.

Ngomane said, “First of all, I’d like to appreciate the role that is played by our community members by exposing such crime.

We are going to investigate this matter since the school is on our list of institutions that we are going to visit through our school-safety campaign”.
Shongwe said, “As a department, we are not going to fold our arms, we are going to visit the school unexpectedly.

It’s very sad that we are doing such a campaign, but we don’t get the kingpins, we only find the people who sell drugs. “Those drug lords are using poverty as they are taking advantage of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
I couldn’t believe my eyes last year when a young girl was caught red-handed selling drugs to make a living.

When we got deeper into this matter, we discovered that the girl was an orphan, and selling drugs was a way of putting food on the table and her lifestyle changed. She started to wear make-up and have fancy things.
We need to work with our local police, in terms of monitoring this school 24 hours. The drug lords who are destroying our children, their days are numbered, woe unto you,” he said.
