Suicide increase causes concern in Nkomazi

The police in Tonga, Nkomazi have raised serious concerns over the increase in suicide cases reported in the area.

Tonga – According to the police, they received four cases of suicide in a space of two weeks.

“A certain Joseph Ndlovu (46) was found hanging next to his 16-year-old son on the roof top of his bedroom at Mdladla trust this week. The following day a 71-year-old man was also found hanging in his house at Ngwenyeni.

Earlier this month a 17-year-old died in Tonga hospital after overdosing on pills. This raises a serious concern on the police side,” said Lieutenant Mzwandile Nyambi, Spokesperson for Tonga SAPS.

The Acting station Commander, Colonel Bhutana Sibiya, has come out to urge the community not to resort to suicide whenever they are
facing difficult situations.

If you know of anyone with suicidal symptoms, quickly refer them to the nearest social worker or psychologist, this is according to the Spokesperson for the Department of Social Development, Mr Ronnie Masilela.

He also cautioned families to pay closer attention to the affected members, as they are the ones spending much time with them thus understanding their situation better.

“If people notice any of the suicidal symptoms, they should not hesitate, social workers must be contacted urgently. Sometimes if not most times, they should not even wait for the symptoms, there are events that happen in our lives that might put us at risk.

“It should then be the social worker to confirm that the person is okay. Otherwise, we should not take any chances,” said Masilela.
