Kids are warned against crime

The aim is to introduce the campaign to the learners and teach them about the disadvantages of being involved in criminal activities.

DAANTJIE – Local police have sent a stern warning to learners who involve themselves in gangsterism at school. Speaking during the Safe School Campaign held at Bongihlahla Secondary School, spokesperson for the local police,

Lt Jabu Ndubane said that they were geared and more than ready to do away with crime in schools as they would be visiting different schools in conjunction with various government departments, including the department of community safety, security and liaison.

The aim is to introduce the campaign to the learners and teach them about the disadvantages of being involved in criminal activities.
In an interview with this publication, Ndubane said so far they had visited two schools, namely Bonginhlanhla and Hillary secondary schools.

“We are geared and ready to make schools a safer environment for all learners, that is why we have decided to talk to the learners at the beginning of the year as we still have a long way to go. We plan to visit all the schools in the area,” she said.

Mpumalanga News also learnt that the police also introduced “Adopt-A-Cop” which they believe will play a significant role in terms of tackling challenges that are faced by schools on crime issues.

“We have adopted one learner per school who will work very closely with the police. By doing so we believe it’s going to be very easy for us to know more about crime activities that are affecting schools,” added Ndubane.

It has been discovered that one of the crime activities that are giving teachers and headmasters sleepless nights, are gangster activities which seems to be rife in township schools.

This has a negative impact as it promotes fighting on schools premises. This has been proven last year when learners of Gedlembane and Bonginhlanhla secondary school were brutally killed due to gangsterism.

She warned thus: “Those learners who are found of the wrong side of the law, will face the music. We are going to conduct random raids and searches.

“We are also appealing to parents to work with us to do away with crime in schools like monitoring their children that they don’t carry dangerous weapons or cellphones as they are not part of the school uniform,” she concluded.
