KABOKWENI – A 90-year-old woman has reportedly been raped in the wee hours of Saturday.

According to the police, it was during the dawn when the woman heard footsteps outside her house, and was eventually attacked and raped by the perpetrator.

“It’s disheartening that just when we have launched the 16 Days of no Violence Against Women and Children’ through the MEC for Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Vusi Shongwe.

Before we could even swallow saliva, an elderly woman is reportedly raped, we are really ashamed,” said Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, provincial spokesman for SAPS.

According to Mohlala, the culprit demanded a cellphone, money, and SASSA card from the victim.

“She was then dragged to nearby bushes, where she endured another rape from the offender. We urge the community to work hand in glove with us so we can catch and put these criminals where they belong. We don’t need such barbaric acts in society,” added Mohlala.
