Shongwe calls for vigilance on the roads

MEC Vusi Shongwe says driver behaviour has always been the most common factor that leads to road crashes.

MBOMBELA – Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe says driver behaviour has always been the most common factor that leads to road crashes.

This comes after a road crash between a mini-bus taxi and a light delivery vehicle that claimed six lives yesterday on the N4 Toll road between Malelane and Komatipoort.

According to the police, the two vehicles collided head on and immediately caught fire.

Four people including both drivers sustained serious injuries and five escaped with slight injuries.

Nine occupants were rushed to Shongwe Hospital.

According to MEC Shongwe, most accidents could be avoided if drivers can change their attitudes when on the road.

“We cannot always have traffic officers in all corners of the road to monitor traffic, drivers need to always practice vigilance and have a good attitude when on the road.

“As we approach the festive season, law enforcement will be increased in all parts of the province and we will severely deal with those who continuously break the law,” says Shongwe.

The MEC further sent condolences to the families of the deceased and also wished a speedy recovery to the injured ones.
