Cefups Academy saga is not finished, says MEC

The matter was referred to a panel of attorneys appointed by the provincial government to assist the department on the issues concerning the proposed withdrawal of the registration of the academy.

MBOMBELA – The MEC for education, Ms Reginah Mhaule said the proposed withdrawal of the registration permits of Cefups Academy hasn’t been withdrawn
or abandoned.

“The matter was referred to a panel of attorneys appointed by the provincial government to assist the department on the issues concerning the proposed withdrawal of the registration of the academy. We rely on the legal team and are still waiting for their opinion and report,” explained Mhaule in her oral reply during the fifth sitting of the provincial legislature last week.

Mhaule was answering questions from DA member of the legislature, Ms Jane Sithole who enquired about progress made on the issue of the academy since the engagement of the state attorney following the death of grade 12 learner, Paballo Seane.

Paballo died on July 31 last year after she was allegedly sjamboked at the school for failing a test.

Sithole pointed out that the department’s HOD failed to comply with certain regulations in regard to the proposed closure of the school.

In response Mhaule explained that the HOD supplied the owner of the school with a written notice of the proposed withdrawal and she (HOD) furnished reasons for this withdrawal as required by law, except for the provision of the task-team report to protect the identity of learners whose names were contained in the report as they were still under the control of the school and still had to write their examinations.
