Sex-tape scandal hits school

"We should stand up for one another. Being in possession of that video means you somehow support the dirty act. It should not be accessible to anyone."

STEENBOK – A grade 12 learner of a secondary school allegedly filmed himself having sex with his girlfriend and took the recording to school.

According to other learners, his friends started beating him up.
“We have just come out of August, a month in which we celebrated women, and then he comes to brag about another woman’s humiliation.

We could not stomach that. We lost our cool and started beating him up. No female should go through this, especially by a person they trusted enough to go that far with them,” said one of the learners who wished to remain anonymous.

However, even though the pupils condemned his actions, that did not stop the video from going viral. One learner said she urged her peers to delete it from their devices.

“We should stand up for one another. Being in possession of that video means you somehow support the dirty act. It should not be accessible to anyone.”

The principal distanced himself from the matter and referred the paper to the provincial education department. “I don’t know anything about that, and I will not speak about it. There’s a provincial spokesperson for that and I would rather you talk to him,” he said.

The Department of Education said it was not aware of the matter and that it should be addressed internally by the SGB.

“The department is not aware of the alleged incident, however, a report has been requested from the district following your enquiry.

In this case it will be expected that the SGB through its disciplinary committee, convene a hearing for all involved parties and thereafter institute necessary charges and appropriate sanctions in line with the school’s code of conduct.

The department has trained all SGBs after their elections to ensure that they understood they were in a position to execute their roles and responsibilities. “We also urge learners to desist from conducting themselves in a manner that may degrade their dignity and rob them of a bright future.

“Our learners need to focus on their studies at all times because in doing so, they stand to achieve their dreams,” said Mr Jasper Zwane, spokesperson for education.
