CALCUTTA – A 23-year-old woman is currently under police guard after her two children were found dead in their house.
Police were summoned to a house in Xhimhungwe Trust in Calcutta on Monday after neighbours spotted two children lying unconscious on the floor.
Officers found a five-year-old boy with injuries on his face and body and a 18-month-old girl with strangulation marks. Their mother was also found lying on the floor with white foam around her mouth.
It is suspected that she killed her children before trying to commit suicide by taking poison.
The children were certified dead at the scene, but the woman was rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment.
The suspect is under police guard and will appear in the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s court as soon as she is discharged from the hospital.
The motive for the crime is not yet known and police are continuing their investigations.
Police urge community members to seek professional assistance when they are face with problems instead of taking their own life or those of their loved ones.
