Township School to be renovated

After a horrific strike that took place early February, demanding school renovations, the department of education will finally renovate the school.

DAANTJIE – After a heated strike over school renovations by learners and parents, the department of education has finally agreed to renovate Mayibuye Secondary School.

In February this year, learners and parents went on a massive strike demanding school renovations that was promised to the institution in 2009. Due to anger and being kept waiting for such a long time, parents locked the school gates with a big chain blocking learners and teachers from entering the premises.

On the day, learners and parents spent the whole day outside the school protesting against the unattended request. Mpumalanga News learnt during its visit to the school that conditions were not pleasing since there were no window panes and the ceilings were crumblink which posed a danger to learners.

This strike took days with the chairperson of the school governing body, Mr Simon Nkosi meeting with the department of education. They were apparently told to wait as the department was facing financial challenges. Seeing that their complaints were not attended to, the SGB decided to go straight to the department, where they were promised that the school would be renovated.

The spokesperson for education, Mr Jasper Zwane, said “In its quest to ensure the improvement of school infrastructure the Department has prioritised the renovation of the school as follows: In the next financial year( 16/17) the department will prioritised the improvement of the Provisioning of water supply to the school.

In the subsequent financial year ( 17/18) the department will implement a project to renovate 20 classrooms, construction of 4 classroom and fence. Based on the scope above the project is estimated over two years starting with provisioning of water in 2016/17 and renovations & construction in 2017/18.”

He concluded that the Department had budgeted R 11.5 million for the whole project including the improvement of the provisioning of water supply.
