Leading lady stands tall

"Working hard and really pushing it to the limit as well as taking advice and having mentors are recipes to success."

BUSHBUCKRIDGE – One of the women to be celebrated this Women’s Month is the local community radio station’s manager, Carol Kintu, who has been with the station in its highs and lows for the past 19 years.

Kintu joined it in its inception in 1996 as a presenter and worked her way up to the helm as station manager.

Under her wings, it has grown to such an extent that it now prides itself on being the only community radio station that owns its own building space in the province.

“Since the establishment of the station in
1996 we were renting offices in different places within Bushbuckridge, until December 2014 when we relocated to our new building which is situated along the R40 opposite Twin City Complex, next to Bushbuckridge Tourism Centre.

“This is an achievement. We are the only station who has managed to achieve this in the province,” said Kintu.

“Working together with our traditional leaders had helped us to obtain this piece of land we now call home,” she added.

Being the lady of the airwaves for so many years, she still treasures memories of her first moments as a presenter.

“Being on air for the first time was so scary, especially when one thinks of how many people are listening.
“I would sometimes receive criticism which were, however, constructive and helped me in becoming the person I am today,” Kintu said.

She believes that many women of the province can rise above the rest, and be recognised in any industry as long as they are determined and committed in what they do.

“Working hard and really pushing it to the limit as well as taking advice and having mentors are recipes to success.”

She described herself as a simple person with good listening skills who enjoyed mingling with members of the community.

Kintu said planning and holding monthly managerial and staff meetings had helped the station to move forward.

“We plan and share ideas together,” she went on.
