Stars scoop coveted trophy

The ABC Motsepe League campaigners, Barberton City Stars FC were crowned champions of a one-day soccer tournament, dubbed Sport Against Crime.

This tournament was held in Salubindza’s Khambashi Mill Centre Stadium on Saturday.

Stars walked off with a cash prize of R10 000 after beating Eleven Man FC by 2-0 in the finals.

“To us this was just preparatory matches, as we try to build a stronger team. We are very happy to have won this competition and the prize money. This has helped us build our self-esteem,” said Barberton City Stars captain, Sister Monica fondly known by his
teammates and supporters as Hazard.

Speaking to the man of the match, Andile Fakude, he stated that they needed to work harder in line with their goal and vision of reaching the Premier Soccer League in five years to come.

The Top Four soccer tournament included Mdluli Supersport from Mataffin who were booted out by Eleven Man FC of Bushbuckridge and
El Shaddai who lost to Barberton City Stars.

The event organiser, Past Angel Nkosi from Mshadza stated that the tournament was meant to help nurture future soccer stars and fight crime in local communities. “We want all our developing teams in future to participate in this tournament. The teams that are playing in the ABC Motsepe League are always welcome and this is a platform
for them to prepare for the new session.

“We would like to thank all the sponsors who came in and supported this initiative. We have a huge list, but we say thank you to all, and we are looking forward to have more games of such magnitude.

“Please help us build our province and prepare more teams for the PSL,” she said.

She also applauded the community at large for coming out in numbers to support the games.
