Locals returns to their roots

Subjects of Msogwaba Tribal Authority showed delight when the Inkhosi Hlungu Nkosi addressed them about community development projects.

MSOGWABA – In a bid to enhance cultural values and going back to our roots, Elangeni Royal Kraal led by Inkhosi Hlungu Nkosi held an ummemo on Saturday where various issues on culture and problems
regarding a variety of concerns in the community were discussed.

Since it is known that respecting our culture is paramount, many people, especially the youth, have lost interest in their culture because their behavior is mainly influenced by the media, especially
television.

The prime aim of the event was to restore the value and the importance of our culture and our roots. Attendees were magnificently dressed in their traditional attire, this proved that there were people who still followed their roots and were proud of their cultures.

The deputy chairperson of Indlu Yemakhosi, Inkhosi Sandile Ngomane
Madudula Art Project performs during the event. said the purpose of the event was also to deliver a report to the community regarding
complaints voiced by residents at the previous ummemo and it enabled the iNkosi to greet and relate with the community, and to restore cultural values.

Seeing that culture was not supported by the youth, Inkhosi Ngomane said, “It is difficult to attract the youth to be part of cultural events for this reason, politicians must invest on cultural
events.

We should combine what they like with culture when hosting cultural events so that we can persuade them to be part of our cultural event. However, when they grow up, they will realise the importance of respecting their culture.”

The community has been complaining about the shortage of cemeteries and the alarming crime rate in the community. Inkhosi Hlungu Nkosi responded to this issue by saying, “We really appreciate the remarkable role played by police officials since the crime rate has begun decreasing in the area.

Addressing the issue of cemetery shortages, we heard your complaints
regarding the shortage of cemeteries. The Mbombela council tried searching for a proper place for the regional cemetery, but have not found a proper location yet.”

Regarding community development, he said a tourism centre was under construction, and it would create job opportunities for community members as it was a three-year project, but he warned the unemployed not to cause havoc by burning tyres on roads.

He further said Emoyeni Mall was currently a popular venue for criminal activities. He then urged the locals to protect the mall. “I
am really thankful for the support we receive from the department,” he concluded.

This event was graced by traditional performances by different cultural groups ranging from children to elders, and with officials from different government departments.
