Mpumalanga excels in morabaraba, jukskei, kgati and khokho, but the best to compete in the national competition in all codes were selected in eMalahleni over the weekend.
The National Indigenous Games will be hosted from September 19 to 24
in Polokwane, Limpopo Province.
The Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation prepared and structured its squad for all codes of the games with its aim
of promoting cultural activities regardless of race
and age.
Spokesperson, Sibongile Nkosi, said the Provincial Indigenous Games was one of many steps the department staged annually
to grow the event. “It starts with local and regional games, which are held to select players to represent Mpumalanga at the national
games,” said Nkosi.
She said the tournament was used to select the best players for the annual national event. The game codes played were diketo (coordination game), dibeke (running game), khokho (running game),
morabaraba (board game), incuva (board game), jukskei (target game), kgati (rope jumping), intonga (stick fighting) and drie stokkies.
