Organisations give back to community

In celebrating the special day of the struggle hero, Nelson Mandela, senior citizens at Elandshoek were given blankets by different organisations, lead by the department of community safety and liaison.

ELANDSHOEK – Gogo Nostinah Khoza (105) was cheerful as she commemorated Nelson Mandela Day with different non-governmental
organisations in partnership with the Department of Community Safety,
Security and Liaison (DCSSL) under the leadership of MEC Vusi Shongwe as they donated blankets to elders in this area.

Seeing that they loved sweet treats, Sanca and Tuisbedryf contributed
cakes to spoil them while celebrating Mandela Day. “I have never felt so spoilt before, I feel like a child again. I have recently celebrated my birthday so this cake acts as a symbol of celebrating my day with Madiba.

I feel so honoured,” said Gogo Nostinah. Elders were collected around the community to celebrate this special day, the main aim being to show them that they were still important and played a remarkable role in society.

They set an example for the youth, encouraging them to look after themselves in order to live a long and fulfilling life. “Elders are victims of rape in this area since rape cases have
been increasing.

We then decided to celebrate this day with them and teach them about how they can fight for themselves and we urge them to report such cases,” said Ms Francinah Mgwenya of the DCSSL.

Sgt Gerald Sedibe of the SAPS said elders needed proper protection
since they did not have power to fight for themselves. “Inform us if
you are being victimised. We are here to help you in every way.”

This event was graced by the presence of deputy minister of economic development, Mr Madala Masuku, who said he felt delighted that departments were taking part in changing the community and worked as a team since no one was left out.
