Houses go up in flames at Mataffin

Three houses and a tuck shop burnt down at Mataffin.

MATAFFIN – Three houses and a tuck shop were allegedly set on fire by angry members of the community over the weekend. The houses apparently belonged to close friends of a certain Nkosi, posing as the rightful owner and chief of a portion of land, including Woodhouse 308JT.

Police opened cases of malicious damage to property and public violence. “No arrests have been made yet and our investigations still continue,” said Brig Selvy Mohlala.
This comes barely a week after the residents marched against the alleged illegal selling of land by Nkosi. The community demanded that he stop selling it to the invaders.

They also gave him seven days to leave the area and go back to where he came from.
“He came here and claimed he was the prince and the land belonged to his family, but had no proof of that,” said members of the community.

According to Mr Terry Mdluli of Mdluli Trust, initially the trust handed over land to the community. To their surprise the land was now allegedly sold by Nkosi who posed as the owner of the land.” We also advised Nkosi to wait for the findings of the Land Claim Commissioner if he has claims to that land,” he said.

On the other hand, Nkosi vehemently denied his involvement in illegal transactions of the land and that he posed as a chief.
Kgoshi Lameck Mokoena, leader of the House of Traditional leaders in the province said they had no Nkosi who was a traditional leader at Mataffin, and added that the land belonged to the Mdluli family.
