UMP to host first ever inauguration ceremony

Prof Thoko Manyekiso will officially be introduced to the public as the captain of the ship.

MBOBMELA – The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) will have its very first inauguration ceremony this Saturday when the vice-chancellor and principal, Prof Thoko Manyekiso, will officially be introduced to the public as the captain of the ship.

Mr Mbuso Thumbathi, chief executive of the Nombuso Communications Group, said the university looked forward to welcoming various high-profile personalities to this traditional academia event.

According to him it will welcome the premier of Mpumalanga, Mr David Mbuza, deputy minister of higher education and training, Mr Mduduzi Manana, vice-chancellors of other universities in the country and abroad as well as CEO of various public and private entities, among others.

An internal source said the vice-chancellor will focus on the long-term plans of UMP, achievements in relation to the smooth incorporation of the Lowveld College of Agriculture into the university, the appointment of new staff, filling of executive and senior management positions and the setting up of UMP’s own systems. According to the source she will furthermore introduce new academic programmes such as the BSc general and BCom development programmes which have been approved by the Council on Higher Education.

“She will also briefly touch on programmes that have recently been approved, including the national diploma in information and communications technology, BSc agric, national diploma nature conservation, future and current enrolment plan, recruitment plan, expenditure as well progress regarding infrastructure,” the source confirmed.

UMP’s head of stakeholder liaison, communication and marketing, Prof John Shongwe said everything was in order and final touches were underway. “The university is excited about the event. We cannot wait to share with everyone what we have done so far and celebrate with our friends” Shongwe concluded.
