Contracts of 546 monitors renewed

"At least 546 TSMs' contracts have been renewed to cover all tourist-attraction hot spots with effect from June 1."

MBOMBELA – More than 500 tourist-safety monitors (TSMs) had their contracts renewed on all hot spots in the province.

“At least 546 TSMs’ contracts have been renewed to cover all tourist-attraction hot spots with effect from June 1.

They are employed by the department to enhance tourism safety throughout the province,” explained MEC for the community liaison, safety and security, Mr Vusi Shongwe.

He said the TSMs’ contracts were reviewed every financial year, in order to determine if they were still aligned to their responsibilities.

“As much as this is another form of creating job opportunities, we want dedicated individuals, hence we review each and every contract before renewing it,” said Shongwe.

He emphasised that although the monitors were employed by and received stipends from the department, they reported to local police stations.

“We expect the monitors to assist in creating a safe and conducive environment for tourists who visit the province.

They will also help with increased community awareness on economic benefits of tourism.

We believe that through this programme, the province’s market share will be improved and our communities will be well informed on issues regarding safety,” said Shongwe.
