COGTA comes through for flood victims

This is after after a storm hit two villages leaving about 87 houses damaged.

MKHONDO – MEC for the department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Ms Nomsa Mtshweni, has urged locals to be alert during the rainy season.

This is after after a storm hit two villages leaving about 87 houses damaged.

According to the MEC, The department has donated 150 blankets and 40 tarpaulins to the affected people as a temporary relief.

Mtshweni says she was deeply touched by the ordeal. She says the department is working with the Gert Sibande District Municipality in an effort to provide support.

“We are a caring government and as such we will do everything humanly possible to assist the affected families.

We are working with various stakeholders to assist the victims in getting lost Identity Documents amongst other things”, Mtshweni said.

She further urged communities to take precautionary measures to save their lives. She advised the following:

*During floods stay on high grounds and avoid flooded areas

*Never attempt to cross heavily flooded rivers and bridges

*Parents are advised to warn children to avoid playing next to rivers during rainy days

MEC Mtshweni says all emergency units are placed on high alert in the province.

She also advised communities to call the provincial disaster Toll free number for emergencies. The number is 0800 202 507.
