Determined to reach a top spot in the ABC Motsepe League, second-placed Phiva Young Stars registered an impressive 2-0 victory against Forek Academy this past Saturday at the KaMhlushwa Stadium.

This win has put Young Stars on 48 points, seven points closer to log leaders Mbombela United, who also won their encounter against Secunda Stars FC on Saturday.

With the full support of the locals, Young Stars enjoyed a greater share of the ball in the opening minutes of the match, creating the most and better scoring chances, however, failing to capitalise on them.

The game became a midfield battle with the visitor’s captain, Malatji Ngwako, leading an impressive and dominant attack against the hosts.

At the half-time interval, both sides had failed to draw first blood, however, Forek Academy went into the break having intimidated their opponents.

The second stanza resumed at a very fast pace with Young Stars threatening and eventually getting the break they were looking for. Stars extended their lead 10 minutes after first goal of the match and by this time, the writing was on the wall.

Young Stars closed all the gates after the two goals, and ensured that the remainder of the game was played in the midfield, or in Forek Academy’s half.

Speaking to Mpumalanga News after the game, Young Stars’ PRO, Thabo Manyovu Mnisi commended his side’s performance despite them playing under pressure.

“We played well, and thanks to the boys for getting us the much-needed three points. “We have to continue putting pressure on the log leaders, because the points that separate us are not that many. Even with the pressure on us, we need to and will continue to push them,” said Mnisi.

He went on to express his team’s gratitude to all local supporters.
“Thank you for all the support we continue to get from the locals. They came out in their numbers.

Thank you, we need the support from the locals because we are nearing the end of the league, and it is encouraging for the boys to see such a turnout,” Mnisi said.

He added that they were in the process of launching an official KaMhlushwa Phiva Young Stars branch. They still have a game in hand, which could prove disastrous for the log leaders.
