Community on rampage after man’s alleged murder

BLOCK A – The community was enraged by the death of one of their own and they wasted no time in taking justice into their own hands.
They burnt down three houses belonging to a man identified as Maphosa, on allegations that he had killed a young man who used to work for him.

Two houses in Tonga-Mangweni, one in Block A, a truck and a bakkie were set alight on Monday night by the furious residents.

An anonymous community member says the death of the young man was questionable, and his friend’s sudden riches were like pouring petrol on fire.

“We have always suspected that his death was malicious, it got fuelled up when a couple of days later his friend went on a furniture shopping spree.

He suddenly had all that money to buy couches, fridges and all these things. The community cornered him, put him in a sack, poured petrol over him and threatened to set him alight. That’s when all the confessions came out,” said the community member.

It is further alleged that the man in question said he was instructed by Maphosa to kill his friend for his body parts. “His brain, tongue and private parts were missing, hence we suspected foul play. We had to dig deeper into the matter and we found that our suspicions were true,” added the community member.

The community then took to the man’s family and threatened to beat up his wife and son as he was said to be a Mozambican citizen. Tonga SAPS spokesperson, Lt Mzwandile Nyambi, has confirmed that three houses, a truck and a bakkie were set alight by the community on Monday night.

“A case has been opened and we are still investigating the matter. The police were not involved in the beginning of the matter and nothing was documented about the death spoken about here.

But I can also confirm that the victim is kept at a place of safety and we are investigating the matter to see if the allegations are true,” said Nyambi.
