Woman raped while illegally crossing the border

A 23-year-old woman was allegedly raped while using illegal routes to cross to the Swazi Kingdom.

TONGA – A 23-year-old woman was allegedly raped by an unknown man while she was illegally crossing the borders to Swaziland near Mananga Border Post on Friday.

According to Lt Mzwandile Nyambi spokesperson for the Tonga police, the victim alleged that she was on her way to Swaziland with her daughter and both of them didnot have travelling passports hence they intended to use the illegal route known as Sicanco to cross to Swaziland.

On her way they were approached by the suspect who innitially introduced himself as a soldier and demanded a R150 to allow them to continue with their journey.

“When the victim told him that she have none the suspect then apparently threatened her with a knife and ordered her to breastfeed her crying infant before raping her. The suspect fled the scene on foot,” explained Nyambi.

He added that the matter is still under investigation and the victim is undergoing counselling.

“We appeal to members of the community to apply for Passports from their nearest Home Affairs offices and stop the tendency of illegally crossing to neighbouring countries,” concluded Nyambi.
