Residents protest against merger

BARBERTON – Just after a week Umjindi Local Municipality (ULM) started to interact with community members about the plan of the Demarcation Board of the merging of various municipalities.

Furious community members on Tuesday barricaded road with stones and burning tyres as a way of opposing the proposal of emerging the municipality with Mbombela Local Municipality(MLM).

This publication learnt that was fuel the protest to be violent is a rumour that circulating around.

It’s allegedly that there are people who coming from Matsulu who will get a stands if ULM will be part of MLM ,meanwhile there are people from this town that are still on the waiting list of getting a stand or RDP houses.

In an interview with Mpumalanga News the regional secretary of the South African Civil Organization(SANCO) Mr Lucky Motsa said that

“Let me first indicate that SANCO is representing the mass if people of Umjindi said ,no to Mbombela and SANCO says so .
We heard about the allegations it must be investigated .We understand that residents have rights to voiced out their problems but we condemned the incident of damaging property “.

Motsa went on and alluded that as an organisation they are not happy the way the leadership of ULM conducted the consultation of the proposal.

”We don’t think that the consultation was well organized in all the wards the attendance was very poor .I believe that people were not given enough time that is why other people don’t understand exactly what is going on .At this stage this is a proposal not something that has been finalized ”he concluded.
