All the residents want is water

The community members refuted claims that the protests were instigated by opposition parties to discredit the ruling party saying they are only frustrated about lack of water.

BUSHBUCKRIDGE – Driving on the R40 between Bushbuckridge and Acornhoek last week was a nightmare for many motorists.

This was a result of a string of service delivery protests that had infested six villages under the local municipality. All the residents want is access to water and they promise to stop complaining.

“The government is always making promises and we thought our woes were almost over last year when a reservoir was erected here but even now we are still waiting,” complained one of the frustrated villagers, Mr Solly Mkhonto.

The community members refuted claims that the protests were instigated by opposition parties to discredit the ruling party saying they are only frustrated about lack of water.

“This has nothing to do with politics. We just want water like any other person who needs clean water to survive,” stated a Ms Lerato Mashego.

The police had to be deployed to the villages to keep calm and peace as the villagers were burning tyres and had blockaded the road, denying motorists access.

“We are tired of being treated like hooligans. Every time we have needs to be addressed we must first take to the street and police will be called to baby sit us,” added Mashego.

Mashego also said that the municipality promised to sort out logistics related to filling the tank with water immediately.

“I wonder why they have to wait for us to strike first so they can attend to our needs,” she said.
