Community urged to exercise caution during upcoming fire season

The general manager of WoF in the province encourages community to cut grass or do fire breaks and prune trees close to their properties.

MBOMBELA –  Working on Fire(WoF) has pleaded with the community to prevent the unnecessary loss of human lives, properties and live stock during the coming fire season.

According to WoF, together with the Department of Environmental Affairs programme, they plan to fight unwanted veld and forest fires and educate people from the grassroots level , in schools and communities across the province about the safety and responsible use of fire in and around homes and in the natural environment.

The general manager of WoF in the province encourages community to cut grass or do fire breaks and prune trees close to their properties.

“Make a defensible space of about 20 meters between the property and the fuel and when the outdoor burning is allowed never use flammable or combustible liquids”, said Bolton.

He emphasised that the most dangerous situation is when a veld fire is moving up a steep slope and the person is above it with bush and grass between you and the fire.

“Never ignore fire even if it seems far away”, He concluded.
