Reading will flood young minds with wonder

The project aims to assist learners improve their literacy skills, improve their performance in reading/literacy assessments as well as their comprehension of all the subjects.

MBOMBELA – Reading is an essential tool in every child’s development hence a renowned business sector has joined hands with the Department of Education in making storybooks available everywhere.

Mr Jasper Zwane spokesperson for the department had confirmed that it in collaboration with I’langa Mall was running a “Book Flood Campaign” and urged stakeholders to donate books towards this initiative.

“The aim is to increase the availability of storybooks in public schools and hence we encourage the public and private sector to participate by donating them,” he said.

The initiative which is aimed to benefit all pupils is believed to contribute to the overall improvement of learning outcomes as a result of availability of reading resources.

The project also aims to assist the learners improve their literacy skills, improve their performance in reading/literacy assessments as well as their comprehension of all the subjects. The campaign will also increase learners’ access to reading material.

MEC Ms Reginah Mhaule also believes the campaign will foster the culture of reading among learners of all age groups.
“We therefore call upon members of the community, the business sector and all other stakeholders to participate in this campaign by donating any type of books,” said Mhaule.

Boxes where books can be dropped off will be put in place by the department and the management of I’langa Mall in strategic areas at the mall. The public is therefore urged to put reading materials in them.
