Rope around neck deepens body mystery

Nelspruit police spokesperson Capt Dawie Pretorius confirmed the discovery of a man's body, adding that an inquest had been opened and an investigation was ongoing.

MATAFFIN – This community was stunned when a man’s decomposed body was discovered in the hills near John Mdluli Primary School, few meters from the Mbombela Stadium.

The remains of the victim, still clothed in mustard-coloured trousers and a dark top, was apparently discovered by a member of the community. He immediately raised alarm and the local SAPS were summoned to the scene.

“It was a very disturbing sight. His body was found on a rock under a tree, with a rope around his neck,” said one community member.

“He might have been killed and left there since the rope looks very short, and this might have happened in December,”
another resident added.

The local ward councillor, Mr Kenneth Mkhonta, urged anyone who had a missing male relative to contact the Nelspruit police, adding that this was the first time such a discovery had been made in his ward. “We trust the police will work diligently to solve this matter.”

Nelspruit police spokesperson Capt Dawie Pretorius confirmed the discovery of a man’s body, adding that an inquest had been opened and an investigation was ongoing. “We cannot speculate how he died until a post-mortem had been conducted,” Pretorius said. Results of the post-mortem were not known at the time of going to print. Pretorius added that his station rarely experienced incidents of this nature.
