Beware of criminals posing as police!

The local police have warned members of the public to be on the lookout for people posing as officials in police uniform.

KANYAMAZANE – The local police have warned members of the public to be on the lookout for people posing as officials in police uniform.

This comes after five unknown suspects broke into a home in Ekuzoleni Section and stole items worth over R108 35,00 on January 3.

According to police, the men knocked on the victim’s door at around 01:00 claiming to be officials on duty. It is alleged that the unsuspecting victim peeped through the door and saw the men clad in uniform and then opened it. He was pushed over and pressed to the floor.

That was when he noticed that the suspects were not police officials but crooks, “wearing oversized uniforms and All Star tekkies,” explained WO Andries Skwambane, the local spokesperson.

He added that the suspects ransacked the house, and stole R1 200 cash, a Risk watch, a Sony camera, DVD player, Samsung plasma television, clothes, car keys and house keys.

“Such incidents are very rare in our area and we had no reported cases of missing police uniforms,” added Skwambane.

He said the only reported case of a policeman whose uniform was stolen from a washing line, occurred about three years ago. He then urged residents to ask police to identify themselves if they were at their homes, even for an arrest. “If you are suspicious, you must not hesitate to contact your nearest police station or 10111 for assistance,” he said.

All suspects are still at large and police investigations continue.
