Illegal electricity connections cause havoc

MATSULU – Illegal electricity connections, known as Izinyoka-Nyoka, are slowly but surely turning into a silent killer and getting out of control in some communities across the province.

These illegal connections are putting children at high risk. This has been proven by the death of a two-year-old child at Khutsongo Section. This newspaper learnt that the child was the third person to die recently due to illegal connections.

The child was reportedly playing with her friends when she was electrocuted. This issue has raised serious concern among residents and the branch of South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) regional secretary, Mr Chris Mashele said, “Let me state that as an organisation, we condemn illegal connections.

This shows that service delivery is very poor. It compromises human rights. I know that area very well, it was established in 2007, but the state of service delivery is a disgrace. The potholes alone are a nightmare.’’

He concluded by appealing to the local municipality to speed up installation of electricity in the area, as poles were installed a year ago, but no connection was taking place.
