Government association reaches out to little ones

Activism on abuse against children should go beyond the 16 days and they should be enlighted about the plight on a regular basis.

BARBERTON – Activism on abuse against children should go beyond the 16 days and they should be enlighted about the plight on a regular basis.

This was emphasised during the South African Local Government Association’s (Salga) 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children and World Aids Day tour on Monday.

The association kick-started the day by visiting orphans at the Milllenium Home of Hope in White River where they brought smiles to the faces of the children by playing with them and donating goodie bags, and sharing some love with the vulnerable little ones who were orphaned due to HIV/Aids.

The children were in awe when local clown David Dee puzzled them with his magic tricks. “This feels like Christmas for them and we are so humbled by this gesture. Our home is always open and anyone can visit these children at any time.

They need this kind of love,” said one of the house nurses, Ms Thembeni Mokoena. More than 80 children at the Masibam-bisane Dropping Centre had an opportunity to be educated about all kinds of abuse before they headed to play on jumping castles, courtesy of Salga.

“It is very important to know all these kinds of abuse and how to deal with it. The most important thing you should know is that you must never keep quiet, but report any abuse you experience,” Sipho Twala from Salga told the children.
