Foul smell keeps customers away

Talking to the vendors, Mpumalanga News learnt that municipal workers hardly emptied the container and if they did, it was only once a week.

WHITE RIVER – Walking along the busy street to the local taxi rank, one is assailed by stench from a large container, spilling waste.

The pavement surrounding it is hardly visible and adjacent to it, vendors are selling fresh fruit and vegetables.
“We are losing many customers due to this smell. They always complain about it and refuse to buy from us, but we are trying to make ends meet. We have complained about this several times, but no one is willing to help us.”
Talking to the vendors, Mpumalanga News learnt that municipal workers hardly emptied the container and if they did, it was only once a week.
“The waste sometimes lie here for two to three weeks and what makes matters worse is that some residents dump their refuse bags here,” they said.
“Things will be much better if the municipality could empty the bin at least three times a week,” they said.
Mbombela’s spokesperson Mr Joseph Ngala was not available for comment at the time of going to print.
