Masoyi strike leaves motorists stranded

Residents and tourists using the Masoyi road woke up to an ugly protest this morning.

MASOYI – Residents and tourists using the Masoyi road woke up to an ugly protest this morning.

Motorists had to use alternative routes to get to work as angry protesters barricaded the main road to Hazyview and Numbi Gate. The protesters’ only demand was electricity, which they claimed the Mbombela Local Municipality had earlier promised to install before the end of October.

Even though a few community members participated in this protest, they sure did a great damage and certainly made their point. As a result of this strike, the Dayizenza Plaza wasn’t operational, since workers were left stranded on the other side.

Masoyi police are monitoring the proceeds and have so far managed to calm the situation down and cleared the roads.

The strikers are saying they are not going anywhere until they have been addressed by the Mbombela Executive Mayor, Cllr Sibusiso Mathonsi. He was reportedly on his way to address the community.
