Robbers steal stokvel money

PIENAAR – Two women have been robbed of their stokvel money in this area.

Such incidents are rife during this time of the year as it is a time when social clubs distribute shares among their members.

The first victim was robbed of about R80 000 after she had withdrawn the money. The second was robbed R24 000 just after she got off a taxi with her child.

One of the victims stated that immediately after she got off the taxi, three men who were travelling in a white BMW, approached her at gunpoint then they demanded the money (R24 000).

Spokesperson for the local police station, Lt Jabu Ndubane confirmed both incidents.

“It has come to our attention that there are criminals who are targeting social-club members, victimised them even in their houses and demanded money.

We are going to work tirelessly to ensure that the suspects get arrested soon,” she explained.

Ndubane urged social-club members to use electronic banking, not to keep money in their houses because police suspect that there are members who are giving the information to criminals.

“We believe that there are members who are behind this scam, providing information to the criminals. The question is, how did they know that the people have money?

“If they want to withdraw it, they must ask police to accompany them so that the criminals will not have a chance to play their dirty games,” said Ndubane.
In both incidents, no arrests had been made.
