Local church and store left in ruins

A heavy storm left the local mission and a grocery shop roofless and countless families with no electricity at about 15:30 on Sunday afternoon.

MAHUSHU – A heavy storm left the local mission and a grocery shop roofless and countless families with no electricity at about 15:30 on Sunday afternoon.

According to reliable sources, it started with dark clouds hanging over the area followed by strong wind and rain, which left the newly constructed Mahushu Alliance Church without walls or a roof.

“The metal structure was blown over and landed on the nearby house occupied by the pastor and his wife, luckily God protected them although they did receive minor injuries – the wife was treated at the local clinic,” said one of the church members.

“There were broken windows and other damages too,” he said. He added that a local shop’s roof was also blown off.

According to community members, they had to endure the night with no electricity following a sudden power cut after the storm. This newspaper learnt that Eskom was busy at the site on Monday, while church members together with pastors and various congregations joined to collect the damaged corrugated iron sheets.

“This is a great loss to the church as they have been trying for years to raise funds for this structure, however, we still believe in God’s provision for new material to renew the building,” added Past Simon Mdluli.

The local church leader, Past Julius Mazibuko also pleads with anyone who wishes to assist with building material, to contact him on 072-027-6394 or Past Simon Mdluli on 072-919-5057.

When trying to get comment from the disaster-management team on the storm damage in the area, they mentioned that they hadn’t received any report from the local ward councillor Zodwa Malumane at the time of going to print.
