BELFAST – The MEC for education, Ms Reginah Mhaule has urged matric learners in the province to excel in their exams as a way of paying tribute to former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

“It’s sad news to lose such a young and talented soccer player at this time, but don’t be discouraged by his death.

Let us dedicate this exam to him and perform to our utmost best and bring a smile to the nation,” she said while encouraging pupils at Khayalami Secondary School in Belfast on Monday.

The school has 43 matric learners who promised to achieve more than a 90 per cent pass rate this year, a significant improvement from the previous year’s class which only attained 64,4.

According to the principal Mr Dumsani Hleza, all systems were in place from the beginning of the year to ensure that the desired improvement in this year’s matric exams was achieved.

“We have been closely monitoring the learners’ results from the first term and so far the indication is that a pass rate between 90 and 100 per cent is possible,” he said.

In preparation for this great achievement the matric learners of the school are attending a camp where they will stay until the last day of exams. They study with the help of their teachers where they revise past exam papers until 22:00 every day.

They are also provided with meals at the school. When asked if the pupils wouldn’t be tempted to engage in sexual activities while being kept at school for such a long period of time, Hleza was quick to say the school with the governing body and parents had agreed the camp was a great way to support underperforming learners and that they were fully concentrating on their studies.

He also expressed words of appreciation to Exxarro HBC and Assmang Chrome for sponsoring the spring camps and other classes for all the schools in the circuit.
