Young scientists excel

PRETORIA – More than 60 aspiring scientists from the Ehlanzeni District were ushered to the Pretoria University’s science department where they gained first-hand experience of the world of science.

These learners, taken from different schools, were transported in style by the sugar giant, TSB, based in Malalane last Friday. These young future scientists had earlier participated in the International Science Fair, held at OR Tambo and Birchwood conference centres where they did very well.

From this competition, the Ehlanzeni District managed to bring home 18 medals of which four were gold and six silver. “As a company operating within the Ehlanzeni District, this is our small way of assisting these future scientists.

“We know that some of these learners come from disadvantaged backgrounds, while some come from schools without proper science facilities, and so we thought by getting involved and bringing them closer to the world of science, by taking them where there are better equipped laboratories, would encourage them even further to pursue a career in this field,” said TSB’s corporate affairs general manager, Mr Vusi Khoza, who accompanied the finalists.

“TSB has been actively involved in this programme over the years and we have invested so much effort and resources in making sure that these scientists in the making get all the support and exposure they need in order to take this career seriously.

We hope that with this small gesture will help to create better scientists for a better tomorrow,” Khoza went on.

Among the learners were four KaNyamazane-based Sitintile High School learners who performed exceptionally well during the International Science Fair.

Three of these young scientists, Bongiwe Nkosi, Loyolah Nonyane and Sharon Msibi, scooped gold, while Bongani Shube received a silver medal.
