Suspect arrested for stolen cigarettes

His arrest follows a concerted effort by members of the police and members of Fidelity Security company.

WHITE RIVER – A 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with armed robbery and possession of stolen cigarettes worth an estimated value of R150 000.

Mr Samuel Simon Skhosana was arrested following a concerted effort by members of the police and members of Fidelity Security on September 29.

He appeared in the White River Magistrate’s Court on October 1 and was denied bail. He will appear again on October 7.

It is alleged that he and his accomplice, who is still at large, approached an employee who was delivering a stock of cigarettes at a local mini market in Rocky’s Drift.

“They pointed him with a firearm and ordered him into their vehicle and drove off before leaving him in a desolate area in Rocky’s Drift. The remaining stock was offloaded into a white Mercedes Sprinter which the suspects used as a getaway vehicle,” explained Capt Gugu Phiri the local police spokesperson.

The suspect’s getaway vehicle was spotted by police who were on patrol, and pursued it until suspects abandoned it and flee on foot.

One of them was arrested on the same day while his accomplice is still at large.

The stolen cigarettes and the suspect’s vehicle were recovered.
