Rural school wins big in Eskom project

Mbambiso learners came out tops from among 27 provincial winners. Their national victory follows their provincial victory, where they walk away with R50 000.

BOSCHFONTEIN- Mbambiso High School’s youth club of Boschfontein Trust won R150 000, a trophy and a certificate from Eskom’s entrepreneurship education in the “Simama Ranta” Schools competition.

The project aims to boost the South African economy through education on entrepreneurship and to identify, honour and showcase schools which are role models in this field.

Mbambiso learners came out tops from among 27 provincial winners. Their national victory follows their
provincial victory, where they walk away with R50 000, side-lining Nkangala’s Sozama High School and Reggie Masuku High School in the Gert Sibande district.

The club’s project coordinator, Ntombizodwa Sibiya, said they were ecstatic about the victory which she believed regained the pride of belonging in province.
“With the prize money, we will extend the projects we had already started which includes a vegetable garden, of which the products are used in the school’s feeding scheme and the surplus sold to the
community,” she said.

“The money will also help us to get a borehole for watering the garden as well as the fencing of the premises. We will also build an arts and culture centre which will also benefit members of the community,” she added.

The club also hopes to buy equipment for making pies and pizza to assist learners during their market days.
Asked how they managed to win, Sibiya said, “We were able to integrate entrepreneurship in all our subjects and the commitment and hard work of all the educators and management yielded this success,” said Sibiya.
