Increase in robberies a huge concern

The couple watched helplessly as three unknown men ransacked their home, robbing them of an undisclosed amount of cash, and houseld items.

TONGA – The latest victim of armed robbery in this village is the speaker of the Nkomazi Local Municipality (NLM), Cllr Jackie Macie who was held at gunpoint in his home.

Break-ins have become a cause for concern around Tonga with two shocking robberies within a week.
Household items worth an estimated R500 000 were stolen from Macie’s house while he and his wife were tied up with cables. The couple watched helplessly as three unknown men ransacked their home, robbing them of an undisclosed amount of cash, and other items.

“The suspects also fled the scene with the victims’s VW Jetta which was later found abandoned. An undisclosed amount of cash was also withdrawn from their bank accounts,”explained Lt Mzwandile Nyambi the local spokesperson.

Nyambi said the incident happened in the wee hours of Monday morning when the men barged into their bedroom, pointed a firearm. They told Macie they were sent to kill him. “They also demanded the latter’s firearm, but he told them he did not own one. The couple were very traumatised but managed to untie themselves and reported the matter to the police.

The second incident happened at Mafambisa on Monday morning when two unknown suspects broke into the house of a 29-year- old woman.

They strangled and threatened her with a knife when she tried to raise the alarm. “One suspect put a knife to her throat and demanded money, which she gave. They took her cellphone and one of them forcefully undressed her and raped her. The second suspect also raped her, before leaving the scene,” explained Nyambi.
