No closure for grieving mother

The grief-stricken mother says she is not getting much from the department of education except what she reads in the media just like everybody else".

SHABALALA – Ms Zandile Monareng, the mother of the 16-year-old Tebogo Ngomane who died last week while he was on his way back home from a trip in Pretoria, Mamelodi, has not found closure as she still remains with unanswered questions which are giving her sleepless nights.

Brig Selvy Mohlala has confirmed that Tebogo’s body was found floating in a dam in an abandoned mine shaft in Middelburg.

“Apparently the boys were drunk and they had an altercation in the bus, which resulted in the driver stopping it in order for teachers to sort it out. The boy ran away into the dark after the police ordered them to do push-ups as a punishment. A case of a missing person was opened and after approximately 10 days of searching, his body was found last week Thursday,” said Mohlala.

According to Mohlala, the post-mortem was conducted on Monday and an inquest was opened.

The grief-stricken mother says she is not getting much from the Department of Education except what she reads in the media just like everybody else.

“I haven’t had anyone visiting me from the department. They promised to take me to Middelburg on Monday for the post-moterm, but they never did. As for the school principal, it is worse because we haven’t met since the news broke that my son was missing. He told me he would assist with the funeral arrangements,” she said.

However, the Department of Education says they are yet to meet the family to discuss how they can help.

“We will meet with the school together with the family to see how best we can assist them with the funeral arrangements,” said departmental spokesperson Mr Gerald Sambo.
