Nyaope smokers targets plasma TVs
Police spokesperson urges members of the community to properly lock their houses.
EMOYENI – Plasma television sets are the target of nyaope smokers and most homes have been targeted.
A set is stolen in order to obtain a “pill” in the back, which contains a substance they blend with their drug.
This practice became very popular late last year and fortunately few citizens were affected, but this time around, it is becoming rife in this community of Elangeni. Ms Nomsa Nkosi, one of the people who has been affected says, “It was 06:30 when I took my child to a bus station since she travels from Elangeni to KaNyamazane Primary School, and I didn’t lock the door because my mother and younger sister were still asleep.
“When I returned, I noticed that there was something missing in the lounge as we had the 50” FHD Smart 3D TV. I then ran to my mother, when I got to her room, she was still asleep as if she was drugged and neither of them knew what had happened.
A case was opened and no arrest has been made,“ says Nkosi. Another five community members complained of similar thefts at their respective homes.
They confronted a suspect and threatened to beat him up, but he then fled from the area. Lt Jabu Ndubane, spokesperson for Pienaar police said, “We know that lots of cases are about plasma TVs being stolen yet we have not seen the pill, and we are not sure if they steal those goods to make the drug. I beg community members to lock their houses and not to take the law into their hands,”.
