MIDDELBURG – Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has called on motorists to exercise great care when driving. This comes amid a head collision that claimed five lives on the N4 Toll Road on Wednesday.
According to the police, the crash occurred when a Volkswagen sedan and a Nissan Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) collided with each other.
Four occupants in a Volkswagen sedan, who died were burnt beyond recognition. One occupant in an SUV died while another passenger sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital in Middelburg for further treatment.
It is not clear what could have led to the crash and the police are still investigating.
Shongwe has wished those who were injured a speedy recovery and has called on motorists to be more vigilant in order to make roads safer.
He has further called on members of the public to assist the government to curb road crashes by reporting any bad driving to the authorities.
“Let us all raise a hand against loss of lives and injuries on our roads by reporting any person who violate traffic rules to the authorities. Our drivers must also come to the party by being extremely cautious to avoid accidents,” Shongwe said.
